The small Joshua tree seen here  in front of you at the lower right is actually a Yucca brevifolia, subspecies Herbertii. This young Joshua could have germinated from seed and probably not from sprouts of the underground rhizomes of a mother tree. This is due to the fact that there were no other larger Joshua trees within a reasonable distance!
